Nike Sportswear’s Unique Retail Installation in the Heart of Hollywood
BEAVERTON, Ore. (August 8, 2008)—In early August, Nike Sportswear will make Los Angeles its summer home with a very special three month retail installation at the Montalbán theate in Hollywood. Running thru October 31st, the historic Montalbán theater will play host to special programming by Nike Sportswear and on 8.8.08 consumers will be able to purchase select Nike Sportswear apparel and footwear from the space, including icons such as the Windrunner, the AW 77 Hoody, the Nike Dunk, Air Max 90 as well as the NSW collection, Nike Sportswear’s pinnacle apparel line, a collection steeped in sports but pushed to the cutting edge of engineering, craftsmanship, and modern design.
Nike Sportswear at the Montalbán kicked off on August 6th with the west coast launch of the Air Force 1 Air Questo, created for 1WORLD in partnership with Philadelphia’s Ahmir Thompson, also known as drummer, DJ, producer and innovator, Guest Love, who played a DJ set on the opening night.
True to its legacy as the oldest functioning theatre in Hollywood, Nike Sportswear at the Montalbán will host film screenings every Tuesday night starting on August 12th with the L.A. premier of Beautiful Losers, a documentary film which celebrates the spirit behind the influential DIY cultural movement. Other screenings include Adam Yauch’s Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot and a special showing of the classic documentary Tokyo Olympiad.
Additionally, the film programming experiences will be extended with thematically-connected workshops. Upstairs a

t the theatre, in a dreamy art class environment, Beautiful Losers’ curator and director Aaron Rose will host “
MAKE SOMETHING!!, a series of community and youth-oriented creative workshops. Working with public school art programs and youth mentoring programs,
MAKE SOMETHING!! will invite local children to participate in workshops such as photography, skateboard graphic design, filmmaking, tattoo art and zine making. Workshops will be hosted by renowned artists from the Beautiful Losers “do-it-yourself” art subculture, which include Ed Templeton, Geoff McFetridge, Shepard Fairey, Mike Mills, Money Mark, Mr. Cartoon and Aaron Rose. The work created in each location will form a continually evolving exhibition, which will be open to the public to view.

As Margarita Cannon, the theater’s creative director explains, “One of the great challenges in having a landmark theatre is reversing the aging process. Nike Sportswear brought in ideas and artists, and now the Montalbán has new life to share with our community.”
Nike Sportswear at The Montalbán provides the world a sneak preview to the launch of Nike’s first stand-alone store in NY later this month.
